Product details of PROCTOSEDYL Ointment for Hemorrhoids
Proctosedyl Ointment contains two active ingredients;
Cinchocaine Hydrochloride and Hydrocortisone.
It is mainly used to treat Haemorrhoids (piles).
Manufactured in The UK by Sanofi-Aventis
Proctosedyl Ointment is available in a 15g tube
Comes with an attachable plastic applicator
Also include a comprehensive patient information leaflet
The active ingredient, Cinchocaine belongs to a group of
medicines called local anaesthetics. These medicines work by
blocking the pain messages along the nerve fibres at the point
of application. This prevents the pain signals from reaching the
brain. This will cause a numbing sensation in the area where the
ointment has been applied. When treating Haemorrhoids, using
a local anaesthetic such as Cinchocaine will numb the pain and
itching associated with piles.
The other active ingredient, Hydrocortisone belongs to a category
of medicines known as Corticosteroids. These medicines work to
reduce and relieve pain and inflammation. Inflammation is caused
by an immune response that causes blood vessels to dilate (widen),
resulting in the affected area becoming red, painful, itchy and
swollen. Hydrocortisone works from within the cell. It actively
reduces the substances produced that trigger the inflammation.
When Hydrocortisone is used topically to treat Haemorrhoids,
it will effectively reduce the painful inflammation and
swelling caused by this condition.
When combined in Proctosedyl Ointment, these two active ingredients
provide effective short-term relief for the treatment and management
of piles and anal itching. Proctosedyl Ointment is suitable for treating
external haemorrhoids around the anal area through direct application.
If the Haemorrhoids are internal, the ointment can still be applied by
using the plastic applicator included with every tube. This applicator
or nozzle screws onto the top of the tube, allowing for comfortable
insertion into the rectum. If your haemorrhoids are solely internal
then suppositories such as Anusol HC Suppositories, may be a more
suitable choice.

How to use it
For best results, first go to the toilet and empty your bowels. Do not strain. Wash and dry the anal area.
Before and after use, wash your hands well with soap and water.
Ointment:
1. If the affected area is on the surface, use your finger to apply just enough ointment to cover the painful area.
2. If you need to apply PROCTOSEDYL Ointment deeper, first screw the plastic nozzle & cap (which are supplied in the carton) tightly on to the
tube, removing the cap immediately before use.
3. Then gently insert the nozzle all the way into the rectum (back passage) and squeeze the tube from the lower end, while at the same time withdrawing it from the rectum.
4. After use, wash the nozzle with warm, soapy water then recap the nozzle.
Note that if the area is very inflamed
and painful, it is advisable to initially
apply the ointment with a finger,
rather than insert the nozzle.
Suppositories:
1. Remove the suppository from its packaging.
2. Moisten the suppository by dipping it briefly in cool water.
3. Put one foot on the side of the bath or toilet, raising the knee to the chest.
4. Insert the suppository gently into the rectum (back passage).
5. Try not to go to the toilet for at least one hour to allow the suppository time to work.
PROCTOSEDYL should not be used
by children under 12 years of age.
